Top 10 Must-See Places to Discover Around La Bastide de Sanilhac

Based in Sanilhac, La Bastide is your gateway to the South Ardèche. Discover our selection of 10 must-see stops to explore around the hotel!

Welcome to Southern Ardèche! Nestled on the green heights of the village of Sanilhac, La Bastide de Sanilhac welcomes you in a peaceful, authentic setting. Our hotel-restaurant is the ideal starting point for discovering an exceptional region where charming stone villages, wild rivers, dizzying cliffs, prehistoric caves and chestnut forests come together.

Whether you love history, hiking or white-water sports, or are simply looking to relax in the sun, the South Ardèche is full of treasures. To help you plan your holiday without wasting time on the road, here is our complete guide to the 10 must-see stops close to La Bastide.

1. Balazuc, the medieval village clinging to the cliff (15 min from the hotel)

Perched on its limestone cliff above the Ardèche River, Balazuc is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France (Plus Beaux Villages de France) and holds the Village de Caractère label. Its winding cobbled lanes (known locally as calades), vaulted passageways, dry-stone houses and breathtaking views over the valley invite you to slow down.

The village can only be explored on foot. You can climb up to the keep of the 11th-century castle, visit the Romanesque church and walk down to the natural beach for a refreshing swim or to set off by canoe.

2. Labeaume and its cliffs riddled with caves (20 min)

Just a few kilometres from Sanilhac, Labeaume offers a striking mineral landscape. The village nestles on the banks of the peaceful Beaume River, at the foot of immense limestone cliffs hollowed out by natural cavities. Take the time to stroll through the small, shaded calades, admire the famous hanging gardens perched above the water, and explore the surrounding plateau, home to one of the highest concentrations of dolmens in Europe.

3. Vogüé and its Château des Seigneurs (20 min)

Vogüé is another unmissable jewel of the South Ardèche. Its old houses with Roman tiles, narrow lanes and imposing fortified castle set against the rock make for a typically Provençal postcard. After visiting the fortress, you can join the Via Ardèche, a greenway built on a former railway line, ideal for a safe ride by bike or a walk on foot.

4. The Pont d'Arc, a grandiose natural monument (35 min)

No stay in the Ardèche is complete without seeing the famous Pont d'Arc. This monumental natural arch, 54 metres high and shaped by the river over millennia, is the emblem of the département. Located at the gateway to the nature reserve, the site is fascinating in every season and has landscaped beaches where you can relax by the water.

5. The Ardèche Gorges Road

Stretching over 30 kilometres between Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, the scenic Gorges road (the D290) winds along the top of the canyon. About ten secure viewpoints let you stop to admire the meanders of the river flowing at the foot of cliffs more than 200 metres high. You can also choose the classic one-day canoe or kayak descent of the canyon.

6. The Chauvet 2 Cave – Ardèche (35 min)

For lovers of history and art, Chauvet 2 is an essential stop. This exceptional replica reproduces, down to the millimetre, the original cave discovered in 1994 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There you can admire humanity's first masterpieces: paintings and engravings of animals made more than 36,000 years ago. The site also includes the Aurignacian Gallery and interactive educational activities.

7. Joyeuse and the chestnut tradition (15 min)

A medieval town with a rich history, Joyeuse is the perfect place to immerse yourself in local culture and gastronomy. The chestnut holds a central place in the hearts of the people of the Ardèche and has had PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status since 2014. Be sure to visit Castanea, the Cité de la Châtaigne (Chestnut Centre), and stroll through the big traditional market on Wednesday mornings.

8. The caves and underground wonders of the Ardèche (45 min)

The Ardèche's underground is just as spectacular as its landscapes above ground. The Aven d'Orgnac (awarded the Grand Site de France label), the Grotte de Saint-Marcel and the Grotte de la Madeleine take you into cathedral-like chambers filled with giant stalagmites and fairy-tale curtains of calcite.

9. The Bois de Païolive and its ruin-like rocks (30 min)

Located in the south of the département, above the Chassezac River, the Bois de Païolive is a unique, enchanting landscape. Erosion has sculpted the limestone into a natural labyrinth of rocks shaped like animals (such as the Bear and the Lion). It is a very popular hiking area for families and nature lovers.

10. The scenic roads of the Ardèche Cévennes

Finally, don't hesitate to leave the main tourist routes and take the small winding roads that climb towards the Tanargue massif and the Cévennes. Among chestnut forests, centuries-old dry-stone terraces (faïsses) and isolated hamlets, these routes reveal the wild, authentic spirit of the region.
