Weekend in Ardèche: 3-Day Itinerary from La Bastide de Sanilhac

Balazuc, Labeaume, Pont d’Arc, Chauvet 2 Cave, Vogüé, Joyeuse: a 3-day Ardèche itinerary, returning each evening to La Bastide de Sanilhac.

A Weekend in Ardèche from La Bastide de Sanilhac: Our Ideal Itinerary

Only have two or three days to discover the Ardèche? Good news: La Bastide de Sanilhac is perfectly placed for a weekend in Ardèche combining characterful villages, nature, heritage and local food. Here is our suggested itinerary.

Day 1: Balazuc and Labeaume, Two Characterful Villages

Start with Balazuc. Take your time exploring its lanes and its views over the Ardèche river. If the weather allows, follow up with a break by the water.

In the afternoon, head to Labeaume. Discover its cobbled calades, its cliffs and the banks of the Beaume. End the day with a relaxed drive back to the Bastide.

Day 2: Pont d’Arc, Ardèche Gorges and Chauvet 2 Cave

Dedicate your second day to the great sites of the Ardèche. Begin at the Pont d’Arc, the département’s natural emblem. Continue to the Ardèche Gorges and their many viewpoints.

In the afternoon, visit Chauvet 2 Cave. You will go from the natural history of the landscape to the history of humankind, with prehistoric artworks more than 36,000 years old.

Day 3: Vogüé, Via Ardèche and Joyeuse

On your third day, head to Vogüé. Discover the castle, the lanes and the banks of the Ardèche. If you enjoy cycling, this is a good chance to try part of the Via Ardèche.

Then continue to Joyeuse to learn about the history of the Ardèche chestnut and bring home a few local specialities.

More Than 3 Days in Ardèche: Other Ideas

If you stay longer, the options multiply. One day could go to the Païolive Woods, another to the caves, another to hiking in the Ardèche Cévennes. You can also simply spend a day enjoying the Bastide, the peace and quiet and the cuisine.

A stay in Ardèche is not about ticking sites off a list. It is also about taking time to look at the landscapes, chat with local producers, taste regional specialities and enjoy the gentle way of life.
